Let's Resolve the Frequent Troubles of LCD Monitor Ourselves

TFT LCD monitors are rapidly becoming shipped with new computers by default. On this page I explain you the frequent trouble of TFT monitor and how to resolve them.

No display or white screen:

If this is a new install make sure the refresh rate is not set too high. If you installed a new video card in your system make sure the refresh rate is not set too high. Under Windows, reboot the system and go into "Safe Mode" (Use F8 key on boot up) select safe mode and change the refresh rate under display properties to either 60Hz or Default. Then reboot the system and the screen will turn on. Maximum mode on 15" TFT screens is 1024x768 and maximum mode on 17" and 19" TFT is 1280x1024. Check to see if the green light is on with the external power adapter. Make sure all plugs are secure and the video cable is properly attached to the computer.

Dark screen in games:

TFT Liquid Crystal Display monitors are a unique devices that are manufactured to meet excellent picture clarity and reproduction in a native mode. Outside a native mode graphics will be darker, fine lines and text will be thicker. Native mode for 15" TFT panels is 1024x768, 17" and 19" TFT panels are 1280x1024. Most games can be configured to run at 1024x768 which should produce clean graphics.

Thick text:

As described above, TFT LCD monitors perform best in their native modes. Other modes can be used however the reproduction of text will vary in thickness depending on the mode the monitor is running in. Best text reproduction is view in the monitors native mode.

Faint or unseen text:

TFT monitors are Bright! So bright that sometimes text in a DOS program may be very faint or not seen. In order to see this text, you can reduce the contrast level down until the text is visible. TFT LCD monitors were manufactured to perform in a GUI environment such as Windows, Linux (X) and Macintosh. Older designed programs may have upgrades to enhance this effect to make the text legible.

Wavy lines on the screen:

In some instances you may encounter wavy lines on the screen. These are usually 1/4" thick and move in a vertical motion. This is caused by a noisy electrical feed from a wall outlet. If you change your vertical refresh rate under display properties to 75Hz this effect should disappear.

Small dot on screen:

TFT panels by their very nature are difficult to manufacture. KDS uses displays from various suppliers including; Samsung, Hyundai and Acer, who all guarantee the display to be 99.99% free from pixel defect. What that means is a 15" LCD display can have up to about 6-10 broken pixels and still be considered "acceptable". Broken pixels are individual pixels, which are stuck on, off, or as one particular color. Depending on their location and intensity, they can be next to invisible or obvious. This is common to ALL TFT screens and is not considered a defect by the screen manufacturer.

Dark areas:

Retail TFT LCD monitor products employ the use of a single TFT backlight. This backlight is responsible to deliver full edge to edge brightness across the screen. On some models the screen may not be as bright in the center or the edges as other areas. This is due to the design the actual panel manufacture took to keep costs down so that the TFT panel is affordable for the retail environment. Prices of TFT panels vary according to added features (TV tuner, SVIDEO etc.). They also vary according to the number of backlights that are in the panel. High-bright monitors with multiple backlights can cost upwards of ,500.00 for a 15" panel.

Can't See Your LCD Screen in the Sunlight? Use a Sunshade

Digital cameras, PDAs, color screen mobile phones, laptops, and many other modern portable multimedia devices make use of an LCD or TFT monitor. LCD stands for Liquid Crystal Display, while TFT means Thin-Film Transistor - usually simply just referred to, incorrectly, as LCD, as they appear to be identical to the end user, and they work on the same basic principle. They lend themselves to these applications well as they have very low power consumption, and a lightweight design. These two factors are essential for portable devices like cameras and PDAs because they are designed to be carried around without being a noticeable encumbrance, meaning both the design of the hardware, and the batteries that power it must keep weight to a minimum. While many of the prevailing issues with LCD screens have been addressed over the years, resulting in vastly improved displays for portable devices, due to the fundamental design of this type of display, one thing that still causes problems is the presence of excess light.

As stated above, LCD and TFT both generate a display with the same basic principle. In color displays, the whole of the screen is back-lit with white light all of the time. To change the color of one of the dots that makes up the screen - a pixel - it shifts through varying degrees of opaqueness. The pixel itself can be made to block all light but, say, green, resulting in a transparent green filter. The white light shines through this, however, only the green component makes it through the pixel, and to the viewer's eyes. The pixel can also shift to red or blue, or if made as opaque as possible, it will appear almost black. One area that LCD screens have never quite been perfect in because of the back-lit design, and the need for the pixels to be able to shift from fully off, where they are transparent, and appear white, to fully on, where they are almost opaque and appear black, all in the space of less than 1 100th of a second, is that the opaque state can never be perfectly created. As a result, LCD monitors always appear slightly gray rather than black.

Compared to what your television, or better yet, a CRT computer monitor can deliver, LCD screens have what is known as a bad "contrast ratio". This is further compounded when light from outside the screen, such as from the sun, or overhead fluorescent lights shines back onto the screen's surface. The result is an even worse contrast ratio, causing all of the colors to appear washed out, and indistinct. It is for this reason that your LCD screens are harder to see under bright lights. Most people who find themselves in this situation quickly learn the simple remedy of angling the display down, or using their hand to cast a shadow across the screen. This is always inconvenient, and in the case of digital photography, where a good angle and a steady hand is required, it is often simply not an option. This is where a simple but valuable range of products to combat the problem comes into play.

An LCD sunshade is quite simply a hood made to fit over an LCD display, and block all peripheral light from striking the screen. They come in various shapes and sizes, for devices like laptops and notebook computers, to smaller versions for cameras and PDAs. Some of the more expensive ones feature a collapsible telescoping hood that completely covers the display on all sides, even from the front face, where you would look in. Instead, they have an eyepiece mounted on this face that magnifies the image being projected from the LCD display, which the photographer puts his eye to. Simpler designs are less restrictive about the devices they will nicely mount onto. They aren't perfect, as light can still come in from behind the viewer, however, if this light is intense enough to matter, in many situations the photographer's head itself will simply cast the necessary shadow on the screen.

A couple of interesting examples warrant a closer look. There is a wide range of other products along similar lines, however these two serve well by way of example. The first is the Hoodman H200. This LCD shade is specially designed to be compatible specifically with Nikkon and Canon cameras, however, it should be good for most 1.5 to 2.5" LCD displays. It is a simple Nylon box, tapering as it comes out, which secures to the camera with a pair of Velcro and elastic straps. It folds flat easily when not in use, and can be easily accommodated in a camera bag. Retailing for less than , if you do any photography in brightly lit areas or outside, it's an accessory that quickly pays for itself with convenience.

The second item, the Hoodman e-clipse E2000 is a sunshade made for notebook computers and laptops. Forming a black Nylon hood on four sides without significantly obstructing the user's viewing area, nor obscuring the keyboard drastically, this could be a useful product if you use your laptop outside at all. Like the camera Hoodman, it quickly folds up flat, and is easily stowed in your laptop case without adding significant bulk or weight. To use it, simply slip it over the upright monitor, and you're good to go. At , it's a little on the expensive side, however, for what it delivers, it may well be worth it.

Due to the very nature of how LCD and TFT displays work, bright light remains one of the most inconvenient hindrances to their use. Whether for your camera, multimedia phone, notebook display, or anything else that uses a color LCD monitor, a sunshade solves this weakness in a practical, affordable way with little hassle.

LCD Versus OLED - OLED TV Screens Will Make a Huge Impact

I could remember about 4 to 5 years ago that plasma TVs were the best flat-panel television displays on the market at that time. A 50 inch plasma TV about five years ago was going for about 00-00 and they had obvious advantages over the big bulky television sets of those days. The picture quality was a lot better plus you could be able to see the image at all angles. Plasma television screens stay hot for a few more years but after that it was the LCD TVs that took over in popularity because they offered a superior image, superior brightness and superior contrast but recently over the last year or so LCD TVs have been coming down in price very quickly. There are many reasons for this price decrease including the very bad economy that we are currently in our but another reason for this price decrease, which few people don't really know about is the OLED display.

The only area right now that LCDs have OLED's beat in is the area of price. I have seen some very impressive 65 inch LCD flat-panel TVs for around the 00 level. Sony just came out with its first marketable OLED TV and it's around 11 inches and currently sells for around the 00 level. Now while OLED has LCD beat in almost every area it still needs to come down in price. Now as OLED technology starts to improve and gets cheaper to manufacture this won't be a problem for too long. I expect bigger OLED TVs at much cheaper prices to come out within the next 2 to 3 years. When these new bigger screens at the market LCDs could be in big trouble.
